I was moved while reading this poem to put it to music (adding one verse and chorus lyrics myself). I guess I love it because it describes so well the shift over the years of His position in my own life. As someone else wisely said after meeting Jesus & watching Him in action, "He must increase, but I must decrease..."

The world, I thought, belonged to me:
Goods, gold and people, land and sea
Where’ ere I walked beneath God’s sky,
In those days my word was ‘I’…

Years passed, there flashed my pathway near,
The fragment of a vision dear
My former word no more sufficed,
And what I said was ‘I and Christ’

But oh, the more I looked on Him,
His glory grew while mine grew dim
I shrank so small, He towered so high;
All I dared say was ‘Christ and I’

Years more the vision held its place,
And looked me steadily in the face
I speak in now in humbler tone,
And what I say is ‘Christ alone’

CHORUS:
Christ alone, my hope of glory
My daily strength, my nightly prayer
Christ alone, yes only Jesus,
All my weights and sins can bear
Only sweet and loving Jesus
Gives me faith, relief from care

He’s been there right through thick and thin,
I’ve learned I can depend on Him
To be my eyes, the light the way,
To help me face another day

I’ve reached the point I clearly see,
I need His power to work through me
I have no strength to call my own,
So I put my faith in Christ alone.
